Canyoning in Tsitsikamma, South Africa.
If you’re the robust type and love getting into the heart of nature, this is the adventure for you and if you’re travelling the Garden Route then this is the place to do it. Many rivers and streams flow down from the Tsitsikamma Mountains and across the Tsitsikamma Plateau searching for the sea. Over millennia these rivers have carved out deep and mysterious gorges that have remained impenetrable to us.
Now with the sport of canyoning (or kloofing as it is colloquially called) the beauty and adventure of these Tsitsikamma river courses can finally be revealed to us. Highly experienced canyoning guides will kit you out in wetsuits, helmets, life jackets and sometimes, depending on the terrain, water-shoes. After repelling down into the depths of the gorge you’ll be taken on an experience of exhilarating exploration; through cliff sided watery wonderlands where water ripples reflect and echo magically on rock walls adorned with hanging moss and fern gardens. Leaping over waterfalls, swimming across dark fern-fringed pools and slippery-sliding on your bum you’ll slowly and joyfully make your way down the river.
