Canyoning in South Africa. Where can I go canyoning?

Canyoning is the activity of moving through a canyon by walking, scrambling, rope-assisted activities, climbing, tubing, or swimming. In South Africa, we also call this 'kloofing', from the Afrikaans word 'kloof' which means canyon.

Swim or float across open pools and prepare for an adrenalin rush when youtube down rapids, bum slide over flat rock, abseil down waterfalls, or jump into deep, beautiful pools.

Tubing is one of the most popular canyoning activities. You are provided with a specially-designed inflatable 'tube' - one that is vastly improved from the car inner tubes of days gone by.  Trained safety guides take small groups through the canyon, teaching you how to maneuver your tube and to negotiate rapids. They'll also point out interesting features along the way.

From Limpopo Province to Mpumalanga, Cape Town and the Garden Route, you can experience a variety of rivers across the seasons.

For canyoning activities, remember to pack a swimsuit, towel, backpack, hat, sunglasses, comfortable shoes and clothes, and a water bottle. As canyons are often shaded and some rivers in parts of South Africa are dependent on winter rainfall, the water can get quite chilly. Activity operators will provide you with a wetsuit. Some may provide appropriate footwear. Remember to pack warm-and-dry clothing for afterward.

For safety reasons, not all canyoning trips are child-friendly or they may have minimum age limits. Be sure to check with the operator prior to booking.
