Whale Watching in the Overberg

A close encounter with the ‘gentle giants’ of the sea is on top of many people’s wish list and one of the worlds centres for whale watching is the picturesque Hermanus in the Overberg region.

During the winter months, southern right whales migrate to the coastal waters of South Africa. In Walker Bay, whales come to calve and mate. The gestation period of a southern right whale is twelve months. The calf is then born, tail first.  Watching a newborn calf with its mother is a truly spectacular sight. The mother gently nudges her baby to take the first breath of air and for the next year, the two are inseparable.

Hermanus is one of the best places to view some peculiar behaviours. When a whale looks you in the eye, it is ‘spyhopping’, a tail out of the water is known as ‘fluking’ and when it merely floats on the top it is ‘logging’. The most impressive move is, no doubt, when a whale breaches – a leap out of the water, twirling around and falling back into the sea with a resounding thud, sending waves of spray high into the water, is one of those moments when you simply must have your camera ready!
