Sadly, they are also endangered. The southern right whale is called such as it was the ‘right’ whale to hunt. Hunters favoured this whale as it moves relatively slowly, is rich in oil and floats when it is dead.
Luckily, the southern right whale is now protected and is making a great comeback in South African waters.
Southern right whales are best viewed during the winter months. During the summer, humpback whales make their appearance and Bryde’s whales are resident throughout the year.
