Hiking in Mossel Bay, South Africa.
The trail name of one of Mossel Bay’s many wonderful hiking opportunities - ‘Hunter gatherers hike’ is a clue to the areas archaeological importance. Besides being ruggedly beautiful, the coast and mountains around Mossel Bay were home to earliest Homo sapiens and later, the bushman and Khoi-khoi. In fact another great hike -The Attaquaskloof Trail, a historic route for elephants and humans over the Outeniqua Mountains, was named after the Attaqua Khoi-khoi who lived there many years ago.
You can hike stunning coastal trails-like the St. Blaize Hiking Trail, where you can still find ancient shell middens, whale watch from cliff tops or explore sea-jewel rock pools. You can go inland towards the blue heights of the Outeniqua range and explore breathtaking mountain paths hugged by exquisite fynbos, with many rare plants waiting to catch your eye.
There are hikes for every fitness and adventure level, from an easy few kilometres to multi-day marathons, from guided walks to self-navigated epics.
