The City of Johannesburg is a vibrant metropolis with a culturally diverse mix of people from all over South Africa, the African continent and further afield.

Gauteng Province comprises six regions – the City of Johannesburg, City of Tshwane (South Africa’s diplomatic capital), Ekurhuleni, Metsweding, Sedibeng, and the West Rand.

History and heritage

MuseuMAfrika and the Apartheid Museum are highly recommended for insights into South Africa’s political history.

Visit the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden in Roodepoort with its breeding pair of nesting Verreaux’s eagles. Klipriviersberg, Melville Koppies and Suikerbosrand nature reserves are also enjoyable outdoor excursions.

Other attractions include Constitutional Hill and the Old Fort, the Mai Mai market and Liliesleaf farm in Rivonia. Cultural and historical tours of the townships of Soweto and Alexandra are on offer.

Sports and events

The province is the preferred MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) destination in South Africa. It has hosted international events such as the United Nations World Summit on Sustainable Development 2002, and has attracted major international acts including the bands U2, Sting, REM, Salif Keita, UB40, and Johnny Clegg.

International sporting events have included the 1993 Formula 1 Grand Prix, 1995 Rugby World Cup final, 1998 All Africa Games, and 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup. Gauteng is set to feature in the 2010 Fifa World Cup with four of its sports stadiums – Ellis Park Stadium and Soccer City in Johannesburg, and Loftus Versveld and Rainbow Junction in Pretoria – among the 13 selected match venues.

Outdoor and nature-based activities

The Cradle of Humankind on the West Rand is where you’ll find the world-famous Sterkfontein Caves, renowned for its hominid discoveries, and the Wonder Caves with its awe-inspiring stalagmites and stalactites. Wildlife attractions include the Krugersdorp Game Reserve, the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve, the Elephant Sanctuary, and the De Wildt Cheetah Research Station.

The Magalies Meander and Crocodile Ramble on the West Rand, and Vaal Meander in Sedibeng, offer arts and crafts routes, artist studios, tea gardens, restaurants, quaint accommodations, nature reserves and adventure activities.
