When the whales arrive, there is no better place to be than on the water. In peak season, between July and December, whales can be seen breaching, fluking and spouting in False Bay. Charters depart daily from Simon’s Town harbour and the V&A Waterfront. Operators give you the option of being out there under sail (weather permitting) or on a motorised boat.
Look out for the large and slow-moving southern right whales and the friendly humpback whales, with their distinctive body shape, knobbly tubercles and long pectoral fins. Bryde’s whales with their long, elongated body shape are around all year but they are more challenging to spot. You may see an Orca too.
Whale watching has the added benefit of including other marine wildlife sightings - seals, dolphins, sharks, penguins and a variety of marine birds will be your companions.
Book your trip in advance and remember to provide the operator a local contact number so that they can phone you if the weather turns.
