Spearfishing is mostly done using free-diving and snorkeling techniques. South Africa’s eastern coastline is a popular spearfishing destination due to the warmer currents being more productive for fishing in general. Spearfishing guns are mostly elastic powered.

A good free-diving spear fisherman can hold his breath for 2 or so minutes and can dive down to about 15 or so meters.

Spearfishing is highly selective form of fishing and produces just about no by-catch. With education and regulations, spearfishing is a sustainable form of fishing.

There a few Scuba operators who are also willing to take spear fisherman out and will supply you with all the necessary gear.  The best way to learn is to join a club near to you.
