Cycling is in my point of view one of the best ways to travel.  You are not only getting some exercise but travelling slow enough to really appreciate your surroundings.  The other great advantage is that locals are more inclined to start up a conversation with somebody on foot or bicycle than somebody arriving in their luxury vehicle and just popping their head out the window to say hi.
