These splendid adventure tours horse riding trails will have you galloping across savannah grasslands to the ocean surf. There are a number of different horse trails that you will follow, ensuring that you experience the best of the Wild Coast of Africa. This is a horseback riding experience that offers it all.

You will go horse riding across deserted beaches where you may come across secret coves. Give yourself and the horse a cool down by splashing in the ocean shallows, then canter on towards the village for a well-deserved lunch in a seaside pub. Rolling hills offer horse trails with a difference, and as you travel inland you will see the brightly painted rondavels – traditional houses of the indigenous peoples of the Transkei. Just over the Great Kei River you will venture into wild Africa and come across local tribal villages where you will experience tribal life firsthand. There are also game farms where you will view wildlife from horseback, as well as a number of other sites that will be seen from the unique viewpoint of horseback riding.

The adventure trail operators are professional, but warm and friendly and will show you true South African hospitality. They have always lived in the Eastern Cape, and so they are knowledgeable about this malaria-free area. Professional guides know the horse riding trails and our friendly staff are on hand to pamper you with delicious food after a hard day’s ride. Our horses are friendly and easy for beginners to ride, but have their own spirit and are ready to take you on a horse riding adventure across the beautiful Wild Coast.

Our six –day trail will have you spend the first night at Sunray Farm, the following two nights at Trennery’s, followed by two nights at Wavecrest, and then another one or two nights at Sunray Farm. There will be an onhand guide and groom at all points along your trail. This horse riding expedition is suitable for all riding levels, but is especially suited to experienced or confident riders.

Day one:

We will meet you at the airport in East London at noon and drive you to Sunray Farm (approximately one hour). After settling into your rooms we will take a short drive to the paddocks to meet the horses. After a brief introduction we will follow the horse trails to the village and the mouth of the Kei River. Back at the farm you will enjoy dinner and drinks, and then retire to bed for a good night’s sleep in preparation for you long day tomorrow.

Day two:

You will rise early to breakfast so that we are ready to begin our ride at around 9:30 am. This morning’s horse riding trail will take us across the Kei River and down to the beach, where you will enjoy uninhibited cantering across the soft, white sands. We will stop at Trennery’s for lunch, during which the horses will be given time to cool down. After lunch you can relax and enjoy a siesta, go for a walk or play tennis, or head to the beach for some sunbathing and swimming. Later in the afternoon we will take to horses to “The Gates”, where you can explore the unusual river formations. Then we canter down the mile long beach in the glow of the setting sun, and head back to Trennery’s.

Day three:

Today our horse riding adventure will include a cultural experience as we head to a local community development project where we will learn about a few Xhosa traditions and customs. From here we will ride past tribal villages and onto the Nongawases Pools and waterfalls where you will enjoy a telling of the local legends of the Xhosa people. From here we will go on to lunch, and then ride to the Jacaranda – a famous wreck on the Wild Coast. The terrain can be difficult depending on the tide, but it makes for some excellent riding as we canter across the beaches and the surrounding countryside.

Day four:

Today we will head north, passing the Jacaranda and riding inland through rural villages, to eventually cross the Kobonqaba River. From here the pace will be brisk as we follow the trail towards Wavecrest; our lunch destination. You will have the afternoon to enjoy at your leisure with an array of activities at your disposal. Stay at camp and relax in the Jacuzzi or spa, where you can enjoy a massage, a mani and pedi, or detox in the Steam Room. If you want to explore the area further then take a boat trip up the river where you can fish or explore the Mangrove swamps. If sea conditions are optimal, you may be able to go out in ski boat to see dolphins. We will enjoy drinks on the deck at the farm as we watch the great Crested Cranes come in to roost as the setting sun ends another beautiful day.

Day five:

Today’s horse riding trails are dependent on low tide. We will head towards Cebe, an isolated settlement that lies just inland from our starting point. From here we will traverse the massive sand dune forests, find a picnic spot for lunch, and then head back towards Wavecrest along the beach. If low tide is in the morning then we will do this in the reverse order, as low tide here offers the best beach horseback riding in South Africa, and also makes crossing the river a much safer endeavour.

Day six:

Today we head back to Sunray Farm. We will cross the Kobonqaba River at its mouth, which is a comfortable wade across at low tide, so the departure time is dependent on the time thereof. We ride back through Trennery’s and enjoy a traditional pub lunch at Seagull’s Beach Hotel. From here we ride on towards the Kei Mouth where we make use of the pontoon crossing, and should be back at the paddock at approximately 4:00 pm.

Day seven:

Riders of the six-night trail enjoy one last early morning ride across the Morgan Bay cliffs before brunch. Departure is at 1:00 pm. Riders on the seven-night package will enjoy more horse riding later this afternoon, during which we will explore the bushveld surrounding the farm. This area is home to Kudu, Bush Buck, Impala, and Blesbuck among other small game, as well as some warthog, so keep your eyes open.

Day eight:

Today riders on the seven-night package will depart. We may have time for another ride prior to brunch and departure. Riders who are extending their holiday will be transferred to the next destination.

Such destinations may include the Inkwenkwezi Private Game Reserve where you can stay for one night at the end of the trail package. Here you can enjoy a safari holiday where you will stay in luxury tents. Game viewing is done via horseback riding on typical trekking ponies, and you may see elephant, rhino, lion giraffe and zebra, as well as a variety of other game. We can also extend the trail by riding farther along the coast. Please note that this is a custom horse riding trail and will only be scheduled on request.
