ACCOMMODATED ITINERARY

Day 1 | JOHANNESBURG to MPUMALANGA [lodge -LD]
(B=breakfast, L=lunch, D=dinner)
An early morning start from Johannesburg and after a briefing, our journey through Mpumalanga will encounter valleys, panoramic passes, majestic mountains, forests, rivers & waterfalls. Few regions in the world rival the astonishing beauty the lowveld and escapentment have to offer. Pilgrims Rest the first mining town, the sandstone potholes at Bourke’s Luck and views from God’s Window will be explored on route to our lodge which is comfortably situated on the rim of the escarpment close to Graskop.

Day 2 - 3 | KRUGER NATIONAL PARK [chalet BLD]
Created by President Paul Kruger in 1898 Kruger National Park is the largest and best known game reserve in South Africa. This old hunting ground is now home to the Africa’s highest concentration of large mammals and incorporates 16 different ecosystems. In the hope of viewing the renowned “Big 5” (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo) in their natural habitat, as well learning about the lesser known creatures, the diversity of trees, shrubs and grasses, we will conduct game drives in our comfortable safari vehicle.

Day 4 | KINGDOM OF SWAZILAND [chalet BLD]
Tonight’s stop is the Malolotja Nature Reserve, situated in the mountainous region of the Kingdom of Swaziland. To enjoy the spectacular views, we take a walk through the variety of habitats from short grassland, to thick riverine scrub, noting the stark contrast between bushveld and damp forest. An evening of stories around the campfire as we enjoy a hearty meal, before falling asleep in our mountain chalets.

Distance/time: 200kms, ± 4 hours, excluding 2-3 hour morning drive out of Kruger, shopping stop in Malelane, Jeppes Reef border formalities & stops for sightseeing etc

Day 5 - 6 | ZULULAND [tented lodge BLD]
Departing Malolotja, we view the beautiful handmade craft at roadside stalls, as well as learn about the local witchdoctor’s market. Crossing the border back into South Africa, we head to Northern KwaZulu-Natal and Mkuzi Game Reserve, where conservation of the endangered black rhino is important. Relaxing in a hide overlooking a tranquil waterhole we observe animals coming down to quench their evening thirst. The following day our game viewing in the morning is followed by lunch and an opportunity to experience Zulu culture at a village on the edge of the game reserve.  We return to the game reserve for an afternoon of game viewing.

Day 7 - 8 | DRAKENSBERG MOUNTAINS [chalet BLD]
A well-known world heritage site and mountainous wonderland, the Drakensberg’s basalt and sandstone cliffs rise up over 3000m forming the escarpment of South Africa.  Locally named “uKhahlamba” or the Barrier of Spears we head south and spend two nights in quaint cottages at the base of these iconic mountains. During our time here, we will walk along narrow paths exploring the natural mountainous streams or simply enjoying the impressive views for which this region is famous.

Overnight: Lotheni chalets – 2 nights in Drakensberg we stay in the park chalets. Twin rooms with en-suite facilities. WiFi not available

Day 9 - 10 | WILD COAST [chalet BLD]
Traveling to one of South Africa’s relatively untouched paradises, the coastline of the Wild Coast is made up of pristine forests, lagoons and vast stretches of rolling grass covered hills and valleys. Kei Mouth, will be our sanctuary for the following two nights. The next day is at leisure to meet with local villagers, explore the area, or enjoy the sun and surf on the beach.

Day 11 | ADDO ELEPHANT NATIONAL PARK [chalets B-D]
In 1931 only 11 wild elephants remained in the Eastern Cape, so the Addo Elephant National Park was established to protect these gentle giants from extermination. Today the Park is home to more than 350 elephants that roam the park as well as black rhino, Cape buffalo, lion and leopard. There are hosts of other large and smaller mammals as well as over 400 species of birds in the park pristine area.

Day 12 - 13 | KNYSNA / TSITSIKAMMA [lodge Bx2 Lx1]
Tsitsikamma National Park conserves costal and mountainous regions of the Western Cape with secluded valleys, lush forests and deep river gorges.  We overnight for 2 nights in the Historic lumber town of Knysna at our lodge close to the tranquil lagoon. We spend time exploring the rocky coastline of the Tsitsikamma National park with a fascinating walk to Storms River mouth through costal forest with chances of seeing whales and dolphins playing close to shore. For the brave, the world’s highest bungi jump offers extreme adrenaline. An afternoon shopping in Knysna and in the evening we enjoy one of the local seafood restaurants. (own expense).

Day 14 | HERMANUS [guest house BL]
From June to November enormous Southern Right whales swim up from the southern oceans to calve and mate in the warmer shallow waters close to the eastern coastline. Hermanus offers some of the finest land based whale watching in the world from rocky viewpoints along the shores often the whales seem close enough to touch. In the summer months we explore the flowering fynbos in the Fernkloof Nature Reserve.  Sample the local cuisine for dinner (own expense).

Day 15 - 16 | CAPE TOWN [guest house B]
Table Mountain rises majestically behind the city of Cape Town, the final destination on our “Rainbow Route”.  A relaxing morning drive through the mountains to Stellenbosch and it’s renown vineyards where we tour a wine cellar and taste the local wines (own expense). Cape Town has many attractions; we explore the Cape Point National Park, photograph the African penguins at Boulders Beach, enjoy spectacular beaches and the last minute shopping at the V&A Waterfront. Optional visit to Robben Island (own expense). We sample the local fare at a variety of restaurants (own expense).

Overnight: Sweetest Guesthouses – Sweetest Guesthouses is a collection of individually decorated houses in a metropolitan area of Cape Town near the V&A Waterfront.. The Sunway group may be spread amongst any of the houses, within walking distance of each other, and the group breakfasts will be taken in the same house. Rooms are twin with en suite facilities. (Or similar guest house) WiFi available.

Day 17 | TOUR ENDS - TRANSFERS
A morning climb up Table Mountain allows splendid panoramic views over the “Mother City”, Robben Island, beautiful Camps Bay beaches. Here you will have time to reminisce over the last 17 days of this wonderful journey. One last look around Cape Town before the tour ends at 18:00.
