The fabulous Ash River near Clarens in the Eastern Free State is the most dependable white water river in South Africa - possibly in the whole of Africa - thanks in large part to the Lesotho Highlands Water Project that regularly releases water into the river so the rapids remain at optimum level throughout the year. It kind of takes the guesswork out of white water rafting - but the nail-biting thrill and sheer adrenaline remain.
