Sabie River Valley Rappelling

When it comes to rope activities, you've got three options: to go up, down or across a feature. Rappelling, also known as 'abseiling', is the 'going down' option. It's an exhilarating way to descend a cliff, waterfall, steep incline or overhang.

When it comes to rope activities, you've got three options: to go up, down or across a feature. Rappelling, also known as 'abseiling', is the 'going down' option. It's an exhilarating way to descend a cliff, waterfall, steep incline or overhang.

Although your heart will race faster than the pistons of a Formula 1 car when you walk over the edge of the cliff, this is a very safe activity. Experienced guides strap you into a harness to which a rope is attached. They'll show you how to position your body and also how to control the speed of your descent. Just in case, they have an additional safety rope connected.

Abseil 110m down the front of Table Mountain, descend into a canyon or get soaked from the spray of a waterfall as you rappel into a large pool at the bottom. There are wonderful abseiling locations in almost every province as well as in Swaziland and Lesotho.

All rope and safety equipment are provided by operators. You just need to bring comfortable clothing and walking shoes. Remember your camera too - views from up high are spectacular!

If you're short on time, an abseiling-only activity can be squeezed into a tight schedule. If you have more time, book longer tours that also include a short hike, kayaking, tubing or swimming. Picnics at the bottom of a canyon are wonderful.

Children are often accommodated, making rappelling a family-friendly activity. Check with the operator about their age limitations before booking.
