Quad biking and quad bikes, or – to be more precise – all terrain vehicles – are fun things. Yes, they’re noisy and – in the wrong hands – they can be used for destructive purposes, but so can kitchen knives. Quad bikes are small vehicles with a seat that the driver sits astride, and handlebars which are used for steering. Quad bikes are supposed to be manufactured with only one seat, although you could be seeing two-seater quads fairly soon. Designed to be used off road, quad bikes are not legally allowed to be driven on streets in certain countries.

Quad bikes are invaluable tools for farmers and all manner of other people working out in the sticks but, like many tools, they also make great toys. They are easy to ride, especially the automatic variety, and they can traverse a great variety of terrains. Best of all, they have very little effect on the ground over which they travel – certainly less than a standard four by four.

Quad biking has a short learning curve. Unlike a motorcycle, you don’t have to balance the thing – that’s the beauty of having a wheel at each corner – but you do need to learn to steer it. It’s much more like a bike than a car and you use your whole body. The fun really begins when you start heading off the gravel roads and into the hills on a variety of quad bike tracks. It’s a test of nerve, muscle and machine to see just how far you can tilt the quad bike before you realise you’ve just passed the point of no return.

They are a lot more forgiving than most people think. There are quad bike tours all over the country and most are short day rides in and around farmland, across the mountains, through forests or in game reserves. Quad biking is a great way to see game but, obviously, you wouldn’t want to ride past a pride of lions or a grumpy bull elephant on one, as they don’t offer much in the way of protection. Nevertheless, quad biking offers a fun, alternative way of viewing your surroundings.
