Fishing South Africa

If you like to eat fish, you’ll really like to eat fish you caught yourself. So it’s good news that South Africa has an enormously long coastline with some really great fishing. But – sad to say – fishing has declined worldwide over the last few years, the last few decades and the last few centuries. So, before you bait your hook or tie on a fly, familiarise yourself totally with all the necessary regulations. Know where all the marine protected areas are, know – and more importantly – know how to identify which fish you may and may not take. Memorise size and bag limits and don’t take more than you and your friends can eat. If you practise catch and release, make sure you know how to do it properly. It’s no good just tossing a fish back into the sea. But fishing is not limited to the sea.

We have some great river fishing – particularly some great trout fishing in the more mountainous areas of the Western and Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State and Mpumalanga. Even more exciting than trout, though, is the feisty fighting indigenous yellow fish, which can be found in most of the healthier rivers.

These fish should also only be caught on fly and should be carefully released on catching. But for some people, the only fresh water fish they really want to know about is the tiger fish There is a healthy population of these famed fighting fish in Lake Jozini in Maputaland in northern KwaZulu-Natal. But take care. They’re not called tigers for nothing and it isn’t just the stripes. Watch those teeth.
